11. Who's got bamboo? | Rizcel Gagawanan
Rizcel Gagawanan is a Filipina-Australian actor, writer, and producer living and working on unceded Gadigal land. After leaving her accounting job, her family, and her home on unceded Turrbal land, Rizcel spent the past few years performing on both stage and screen. Her most notable work includes Carpark Clubbing, Duckpond, Undertaking, and Blood Wedding.
Theatre critic reviews have described Rizcel’s performances as “powerful”, “spine-chilling”, “mischievous and confident”, “completely disarming”, “enormously entertaining”, and “impossible to look away from”. Rizcel is passionate about supporting fresh new works created by emerging artists and has helped in the development of many new works by women and playwrights of colour.
As a writer Rizcel is a proud member of SWEATSHOP (a literary movement in Western Sydney). Rizcel’s upcoming writing project The Filipinx Writers Room is a collaboration with other talented Filipinx artists who aim to showcase the multiplicity of the Filipinx-Australian experience on mainstream story-telling platforms. This project is an initiative funded by Create NSW which Rizcel co-produced. Rizcel is also a core committee member and Treasurer for Women in Theatre and Screen (WITS) and has recently joined the inaugural Sport for Jove Producer Mentorship program. Through writing and producing initiatives Rizcel aims to create opportunities for other artists underrepresented in the industry.
